Zagreb’s melody

A poem about Zagreb, Croatia’s capital city.

In Zagreb's heart where cobblestones gleam,

A city of tales, a poet's dream.

Nestled amongst hills just right,

Zagreb enchants in morning light.

~

Beneath the spires, red rooftops dance,

A symphony of colours, a visual trance.

Medieval echoes whisper in the breeze,

In Zagreb's embrace, time finds its ease.

~

Ban Jelačić Square, a lively stage,

Where history and modernity engage.

Blue trams weave through streets with rhythmic glee,

Zagreb's heartbeat east of the sea.

~

St. Mark's Church, a mosaic of pride,

Stories etched in colours, nowhere to hide.

Lotus blooms, a Croatian crest,

Zagreb's skyline is the nest.

~

Kaptol and Gradec, hillsides unite,

A tale of two cities that were at their height.

The funicular whispers secrets untold,

In its ascent, history unfolds.

~

A city of museums, culture's embrace,

Zagreb's elegance, impossible to erase

In the city’s cafés, a culture takes flight,

Espresso dreams dance in the sunlight.

~

Dolac Market, a lively affair,

Colours and aromas fill the air.

From fresh produce to crafts so fine,

In Zagreb's heart, artisans shine.

~

Mirogoj Cemetery, a serene retreat,

Where whispers of poets and leaders meet.

Cypress guardians in solemn rows,

Zagreb's stories, in silence, compose.

~

In every corner, a poetic spree,

Oh Zagreb, a timeless melody.

Unraveling the Veze: Navigating Croatia's Network of Connections

Veze, which translates to connections or networks, plays a significant role in daily life when living in Croatia.

In Croatia, the term "veze" holds a unique and influential position in the realms of employment, bureaucracy, and everyday life. Veze, which translates to connections or networks, plays a significant role in shaping career paths, expediting bureaucratic processes, and even influencing various aspects of daily living. In this blog post, we'll delve into the intricacies of veze in Croatia, exploring how these connections can be both a valuable resource and a potential challenge.

Veze in the Job Market

One of the most notable areas where veze comes into play is the job market. In Croatia, networking often proves to be as essential as qualifications and skills when it comes to securing employment. Knowing the right people or having influential connections within a particular industry can significantly increase one's chances of landing a job. This phenomenon is particularly evident in competitive fields where job opportunities are scarce, making veze a crucial factor for career advancement.

Securing a job through veze is not just about who you know, but also about the relationships you cultivate. In many cases, recommendations from trusted individuals can carry more weight than a stellar resume. This dynamic has led to a complex interplay between meritocracy and networking in Croatia's professional landscape.

Bureaucracy and Veze

Beyond the job market, veze also plays a pivotal role in navigating Croatia's bureaucratic landscape. Dealing with paperwork, obtaining permits, or addressing legal matters can be a daunting task for individuals without the right connections. Those with veze often find bureaucratic processes expedited, thanks to a network of contacts who can facilitate smoother interactions with government offices and officials.

While veze can be a valuable resource for simplifying bureaucratic hurdles, it also raises concerns about fairness and equal access. The potential for preferential treatment based on connections has sparked debates about the need for more transparent and equitable systems, especially in governmental and administrative processes.

Everyday Life and Social Veze

Veze extends beyond professional and bureaucratic spheres, permeating various aspects of everyday life in Croatia. From social events to community engagement, having a robust network of connections can enhance one's social standing and provide a sense of belonging. Informal networks and personal relationships often contribute to the fabric of daily life, creating a web of interconnectedness that influences social dynamics.

However, as with any system based on personal connections, the reliance on veze raises questions about inclusivity and equal opportunities. Striking a balance between the advantages of networking and the principles of fairness remains an ongoing challenge in Croatian society.

Veze in Croatia represents a complex tapestry woven into the fabric of daily life, influencing career trajectories, bureaucratic experiences, and social dynamics. While connections can undoubtedly open doors and streamline processes, the challenge lies in ensuring that such networks contribute to a fair and inclusive society. As Croatia navigates the evolving dynamics of veze, a delicate balance between meritocracy and networking is essential for fostering a thriving and equitable community.

Croatia vs. Canada: Unveiling the Quality of Life Winner in 2023

Let’s dive into the differences that make Croatia a gem in the realm of quality of life.

As we stand at the threshold of 2023, the pursuit of an idyllic quality of life prompts many to explore new horizons. In this quest, Croatia emerges as an unexpected champion, outshining the renowned standards of Canada; once a location many prospective immigrants saw as a land of promise for a better future. Let’s unravel the myriad reasons why Croatia stands as the superior choice, especially for young couples seeking a more enriching and easy-going lifestyle. While acknowledging the pitfalls, such as bureaucracy and government corruption, we'll delve into the differences that make Croatia a gem in the realm of quality of life.

Cost of Living

Croatia takes the lead when it comes to affordability. The cost of living is notably lower than in many Canadian cities, providing young couples with a chance to live comfortably without being weighed down by financial burdens. Whether it’s housing, utility costs, transportation, groceries, or daily expenses, Croatia's cost-effective lifestyle ensures that your hard-earned money goes further, allowing for a more enjoyable and stress-free existence.

Enchanting Scenery

While Canada boasts its share of stunning landscapes, Croatia's scenery is a tapestry woven with historical charm and natural beauty. The Adriatic coastline, dotted with picturesque islands and historic towns, offers a backdrop that is both captivating and enriching. The diversity in landscapes, from the Plitvice Lakes National Park to the sun-kissed beaches, creates an environment that beckons exploration and provides a daily source of inspiration.

Safety and Comfort

Croatia's commitment to safety is a standout feature. With low crime rates and a welcoming atmosphere, residents experience a sense of security that contributes to a comfortable and stress-free lifestyle. While Canada is known for its safety, Croatia's smaller size and community-oriented mindset further enhance the feeling of being part of a close-knit and secure environment.

Mediterranean Lifestyle

For young couples seeking a more laid-back and enriching lifestyle, Croatia's Mediterranean charm is a magnet. The emphasis on work-life balance, leisurely meals, and a cultural appreciation for relaxation creates an environment that fosters personal well-being. Canada's fast-paced urban life may have its attractions, but Croatia's approach to daily living encourages young couples to savor the moments, forging a stronger bond in a more relaxed setting.

Pitfalls to Acknowledge

Croatia is not without its challenges. Bureaucracy can sometimes be cumbersome, and instances of government corruption have been reported. While these issues are present, they are not insurmountable, and the overall lifestyle benefits may outweigh these concerns.

In the intricate dance between Croatia and Canada, 2023 sees Croatia emerge as the unexpected yet undeniable winner for young couples seeking a more enriching and easy-going lifestyle. While acknowledging the pitfalls, the lower cost of living, enchanting scenery, commitment to safety, and the allure of the Mediterranean lifestyle make Croatia a beacon for those yearning for a life less ordinary. As the sun sets over the Adriatic, it paints a picture of a life filled with warmth, community, and a sense of fulfillment—a life that Croatia promises to those ready to embrace its charms.

Croatian Football: More Than a Game, a Way of Life.

Beyond the mesmerizing beauty of its coastlines and historic cities, football has become ingrained in the very fabric of Croatian society, transcending mere sport to become a way of life.

In the heart of southeastern Europe lies a nation where the passion for football runs deeper than the Adriatic Sea itself. Croatia, with its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes, has etched its identity into the global footballing landscape. Beyond the mesmerizing beauty of its coastlines and historic cities, football has become ingrained in the very fabric of Croatian society, transcending mere sport to become a way of life.

History and Heritage

Croatia's footballing saga is one intertwined with the nation's history. Emerging as an independent nation in 1991, Croatia's national team quickly became a symbol of unity and pride. The war-torn country found solace in the success of its football team, culminating in a fairy-tale run to the World Cup final in 1998. Though they fell short, the team's journey was more than a sporting achievement; it was a source of hope and resilience for a nation finding its feet.

Passion Personified

Step foot in any Croatian town on a matchday, and you'll witness an unparalleled spectacle. Football is not merely a game here; it's a communal experience. Families gather around television sets, friends convene in local pubs, and entire neighborhoods come alive with the cheers and chants of passionate fans. The iconic checkerboard jerseys of the national team are not just a uniform but a symbol of collective identity.

Local Heroes, Global Stars

Croatia has produced a plethora of footballing talent that has made an indelible mark on the global stage. From the legendary Davor Šuker to modern-day maestros like Luka Modrić and Ivan Rakitić, Croatian players have not only brought glory to their nation but have also become revered figures worldwide. The success of these players has further fueled the enthusiasm of the next generation, inspiring dreams that extend beyond the borders of this small but football-crazed nation.

Football and Community

In Croatia, football is not confined to the elite leagues or the national team; it permeates through the grassroots. Local clubs serve as community hubs, fostering a sense of camaraderie that goes beyond the pitch. From the youngest aspiring players to the seasoned veterans, everyone is connected by a shared love for the game. Football tournaments and events are not just sporting occasions; they are social gatherings that strengthen the bonds within neighborhoods and towns.

International Success

The pinnacle of Croatia's footballing journey came in 2018 when the national team, led by captain Luka Modrić, reached the World Cup final in Russia. Though they fell short once again, the entire nation rallied behind their team, celebrating the achievement as if it were a victory. The tournament showcased the resilience, skill, and unity of the Croatian squad, etching their names into football history.

Football in Croatia is more than a game; it's a reflection of the nation's spirit, history, and collective identity. From the cheers echoing in the streets to the moments of glory etched in the history books, football has become an integral part of Croatian life. As the beautiful game continues to capture the hearts of the nation, Croatia's love affair with football is destined to endure, weaving its way through the cultural tapestry of this extraordinary country.

Bura and Jugo: Croatia's breezy ballet

If you've ever wondered why Croatians are such experts at windsurfing or why your carefully constructed beach umbrella becomes an airborne projectile, welcome to the world of Bura and Jugo.

Ah, Croatia – the land of sun-kissed beaches, historic wonders, and the stars of our meteorological sitcom, Bura and Jugo. If you've ever wondered why Croatians are such experts at windsurfing or why your carefully constructed beach umbrella becomes an airborne projectile, welcome to the world of Bura and Jugo – the dynamic duo of Croatian weather. Let's dive into the hilarious drama and dance of these two winds, where weather forecasts turn into stand-up routines.

Bura: The Unapologetic Gust of Gusts

Meet Bura, the wind that takes no prisoners and arrives unannounced, like that friend who shows up at your doorstep with a suitcase for an indefinite stay. Bura is like the eccentric aunt of Croatian weather – unpredictable, unapologetic, and often stealing the show. When Bura makes an entrance, you'll find locals holding onto their hats, literally, as this gusty character whips through streets and coastal towns, rearranging outdoor furniture and leaving a trail of flying hair accessories in its wake. It's like a high-energy dance routine where everyone is a reluctant participant, and umbrellas are the backup dancers desperately trying to keep up.

Jugo: The Moody Maestro of Melancholy

And then, there's Jugo – the brooding maestro of the Adriatic, bringing with it a symphony of rain, humidity, and a general sense of "meh." Jugo is the friend who cancels plans at the last minute, leaving you staring out the window with a cup of tea, contemplating life's mysteries. It's the wind that whispers tales of distant lands, but instead of adventure, it brings a melancholic mood to the Croatian coast. Living with Jugo is like having a perpetually moody roommate – you never quite know what to expect, and it has a tendency to linger longer than you'd prefer.

Bura vs. Jugo: The Epic Showdown

Picture this: Bura and Jugo locked in an epic battle for dominance over the Adriatic stage. Bura, with its relentless energy, tries to blow away Jugo's clouds, while Jugo retaliates with bursts of rain, challenging Bura's mighty gusts. It's a meteorological soap opera with plot twists that even the most seasoned weather forecaster can't predict. The locals, however, have learned to embrace the chaos, turning the windy showdown into a spectator sport. Popcorn, anyone?

Bura and Jugo Survival Tips

Living in Croatia means mastering the art of Bura and Jugo survival. Tip #1: Invest in industrial-strength hair gel. Tip #2: Secure all loose items in your backyard, unless you want to play a real-life game of catch-the-flying-lawn-chair. Tip #3: Embrace the unpredictability and carry an umbrella at all times, not for the rain, but as a makeshift parachute for unexpected gusts.

Bura and Jugo may be the quirky side characters in Croatia's weather narrative, but they add a touch of humor and unpredictability to daily life. So, the next time Bura and Jugo decide to tango across the Adriatic, grab a front-row seat, enjoy the show, and remember: life in Croatia is a breeze, sometimes quite literally!

Embracing Stability: Our Decision to Settle Down in Croatia

The decision wasn't made overnight; it was a culmination of various factors that aligned perfectly, creating a compelling narrative for a new chapter in our lives.

Have you ever felt the magnetic pull of a place, urging you to put down roots and call it home? That's exactly what happened to us when we finally decided to trade in our nomadic lifestyle for the serene beauty of Croatia. The decision wasn't made overnight; it was a culmination of various factors that aligned perfectly, creating a compelling narrative for a new chapter in our lives.

Security and Peace of Mind

One of the foremost reasons behind our decision was the sense of security that Croatia offered. Having roamed across different countries, each with its own set of uncertainties, we longed for a place that exuded safety and tranquility. Croatia's low crime rates and welcoming atmosphere promised the peace of mind we had been yearning for. In this picturesque Mediterranean haven, we found a sanctuary where we could unwind without the constant worry that often accompanies a nomadic lifestyle. Gone are the days of constantly researching new places to stay and being worried about the neighbourhood, wifi, and all the uncertainties that come with living in a country where you are not a citizen, nor do you know the language.

Familiarity and Cultural Richness

Living out of a suitcase had its charms, but it also came with the price of perpetual unfamiliarity. Not only was one of us born here (Martina), but having family here, as well as knowing the language, the customs, and culture, made us feel at home each time we would visit. On top of that, Croatia, with its rich history and warm people, presented an inviting blend of the old and the new. The charming cobblestone streets, historic landmarks, and the melodious hum of the Croatian language became the backdrop of our everyday life. It was the familiarity we craved, a place where we could form lasting connections and truly become a part of the community.

Quality of Life

Croatia's commitment to a high quality of life was a major draw. The country boasts a well-balanced lifestyle, where nature and urbanity coexist harmoniously. From the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea to the lush green landscapes, Croatia offers a stunning backdrop for a life filled with outdoor adventures and cultural exploration. The emphasis on work-life balance aligns perfectly with our desire to savour each moment rather than simply counting them.

Community and Connection

As we planted our roots in Croatia, we discovered a sense of belonging within a community that values human connections. The local warmth and the camaraderie of individuals adds an enriching layer to our lives. It's a feeling of being part of something larger than oneself, an essential element often missed in the transient life of a nomad.

Our decision to move to Croatia wasn't merely a geographic shift; it was a conscious choice to embrace security, familiarity, and a high quality of life. This beautiful country has become the backdrop to a new chapter filled with meaningful connections and a sense of belonging. As we embark on this journey of stability, Croatia's allure serves as a reminder that sometimes, the most fulfilling adventures are the ones that lead us home.

10 things to do in Phuket

The top 10 things to do on your next holiday in Phuket.

Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand and has been branded as the “pearl of the Andaman”. The rainforest jungle setting amidst the clear, turquoise-hued beaches prove this title to be completely spot on. Whenever Phuket comes to mind, many travelers immediately think about the sin city of Patong, where beachgoers party from morning until night and go-go girls play ping-ping shows. However, Phuket is so much more than that. The island offers a diverse space for all types of travelers. Below we show you that distinct range with our list of the top 10 things to do on your next holiday in Phuket.

CRUISE THROUGH PHANG NGA BAY

With crystal-clear emerald water and protruding limestone karts, the setting at Phang Nga Bay is simply breathtaking. Take an organized sailing trip or rent a long-tail boat to cruise around the many islands surrounding this bay. Stop at the island of Koh Tapu, more famously known as “James Bond Island”, where a 007 flick was filmed. For most tours, this is usually paired with a lunchtime stop at the charming fishing village on stilts, Koh Panyee.

EXPLORE THE BEACHES

Phuket has its own fair share of spectacular beaches that offer ultimate relaxation and pristine turquoise-hue waters. Some of the best beaches include: Kata Noi, Nai Harn, Freedom, Karon, Kata, Surin, Bang Tao, and Kamala. On each of these beaches you can pay approximately 200 baht to relax on a sunbed for the day. Rent a motorbike so you can easily explore the beauty of the beaches this island has to offer.

STROLL AROUND THE OLD TOWN

This historic part of town is lined with Buddhist and Chinese temples, charming cafes, museums, and a famous ex-red light district. Phuket has a history as a tin-mining country that was home to Siamese, Chinese, Malays, Indians, Euraisians, and sea-gypsies. Throughout the old town you will notice two distinct styles of buildings; Sino-Colonial style mansions, as well as shop-houses styled after the Sino-Portugese.

TAKE IN THE HILLTOP VIEWS

Take a trip to the top of Nakkerd Hill, between Chalong and Kata, to get a complete 360-degree view of the island. Also, don’t miss the most photographed viewpoint, Phromthep Cape, where you’ll witness an incredible sunset. Other amazing viewpoints include: Kata Viewpoint, Three Beaches Hilltop, Radar Hill Viewpoint, Windmill Viewpoint, Panwa Viewpoint, and Khao Rang/Rang Hill. All offer great views while you cool off with the breeze from the Andaman Sea.

VISIT A RESCUE & REHABILITATION CENTER

Visit the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, whose aim is to build up and conserve the gibbon apes destroyed in Phuket by poaching during the 1980s. Make another trip to the Soi Dog Foundation, a not-for-profit charitable organization, whose goal is to help the homeless, neglected, and abused dogs and cats of Thailand. Instead of participating in tourist attractions that promote the inhumane treatment of animals, visit these organizations to learn what you can do to help.

EXPERIENCE THE NIGHTLIFE OF BANGLA ROAD

Spread over 400 meters, Bangla Road is Phuket’s party district. Here you’ll witness street performances at every turn and, if you’re brave enough, even a “ping pong show”. Bangla Road is divided into three main sections: the end furthest from the beach with the popular nightclubs and beer complexes; the middle section that has an array of shopping options and live music; and the end closest to the beach offers a chilled-out vibe with Aussie bars, cabarets, souvenir shops, and fast food.

SHOP ‘TILL YOU DROP AT NAKA MARKET

Stalls at this popular market include an array of jewelry, bags, clothing, and all types of Thai street food. Although busiest after 6:00 p.m., it’s a good idea to head here in the evening since much of the market is laid out under a tin roof. Unlike the beachside vendors, you won’t be hassled here. Since most of the products at Naka are similar to those sold at Patong, the prices here are usually better, especially with some expected bartering.

SPEND A NIGHT OUT WATCHING MUAY THAI BOXING

Head over to Phuket’s Patong Beach area to the stadiums on Soi Sai Namyen, where you’ll witness Thailand’s popular spectator sport, the martial art of Muay Thai. To experience this event live is much more riveting than on television, especially with the passion and cheers of the crowds, coupled with the music and betting around the stadium. If you don’t mind the violence, you’ll experience five intense rounds of three minutes each.

FEED YOUR SPIRIT AT WAT CHALONG & PHUKET TEMPLES

In Phuket, there are twenty-nine different Buddhist temples. Eight kilometers outside the city is the most visited, “Wat Chalong”. Here you’ll find a number of significant statues, even a gilt-covered one that is sure to catch your eye. The Grand Pagoda contains a splinter of Lord Buddha's bone and is decorated with wall paintings depicting the Buddha's life story. Other temples to include during your visit are: Phuket Big Buddha, Jui Tui Shrine, Wat Khao Rang, and Wat Phra Thong.

TAKE A DAY TRIP TO THE PHI PHI ISLANDS

The Phi Phi Islands are a set of two islands; Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don. The first of these is where you’ll find the famous film location of “The Beach”, Maya Bay. Both are approached by long boats with cliffs overhead on both sides that lead to a turquoise beachfront surrounded by a jungle backdrop. Rent a longboat early in the morning to avoid the large influx of tourists and you’ll get an insta-worthy “The Beach” jumping shot with no one else in sight.

How I fell in love with Vietnam.

Vietnam was a place where my dreams have danced since my earliest memories.

Vietnam was a place where my dreams have danced since my earliest memories. Although this may seem a bit strange to recall as a source of my inspiration, I remember watching Apocalypse Now and my eyes widening with intrigue and wonder. I compartmentalized the harrowing theme and focused in on the sights and sounds of the south Vietnamese villages and narrow waterways of the Mekong Delta. The desire to experience it for myself was strengthened by watching endless Anthony Bourdain series and hearing that, ironically, he too felt this passion to visit a place amidst of watching such a terorizing war film. Because I deeply respected his take on travel, I knew it had to be special for such an inspirational figure to claim it as his absolute favourite place on Earth. But to be completely honest, I didn’t fully realize to what extent a visit to this far away land could transform my entire psyche.

After a grueling journey 20-somewhat-hour joruney, we landed in the rainy, humid, chaotic, and energetic capital of Hanoi. I remember taking the taxi to our Airbnb in the old quarter and, our usually talkative selves were completely silent. We were utterly and completely awestruck. We tried to take it all in. Not like we possibly could. The sights, the sounds, the smells; our senses were overloaded in the best way possible. We opened our balcony doors to a hustling and bustling city that, at the same time, was tropical, green, and humid as hell. Next door to our place we chowed down on probably the only Vietnamese meal we knew of, good ‘ol Pho. By the way, it is pronounced “Fuh”, not “Fo”; locals told us the latter was actually how you say street in Vietnamese. Cool, I had been ordering a chicken street from the first time I found out about that savoury soup dish. That simple language mixup was the catalyst to us deciding that the next day, we would do what I would recommend to any first-time Vietnam traveller — a food tour. That night, it was the hottest and most humid weather I have ever felt in my entire life. Our clothes were soaked. We were not only fed the most delicious assortment of northern Vietnamese dishes, but we also learned how to cross the motorbike mania streets (spoiler alert: you just walk and pray you don’t get hit… don’t stop because you will get hit… fun!). This was the beginning of my love affair. Vietnam was already proving its worth in value as I expected. Every experience was better than the last.

We travelled through the entire country for the next two months, north to south, by train. Our next destination, in the mountains of Sapa was when things took a turn for the worse. We were thrown off of our motorbike. by some darting goats. We were bruised, scraped, and pretty much traumatized. I hyperventilated and screamed I would never get on another motorbike again even though it was the only way for us to get back to our hotel. After spending a few weeks recovering, we still continued on our journey with (some) high hopes. That was until my husband’s birthday, when I fractured my ankle on our way to breakfast in the morning in a beautiful place called Ninh Binh. Once again, we were out of commission for another two weeks. It just continued to spiral downwards from there. We hit the monsoons in central Vietnam and were rained in for another week. We lost some of our stuff and had numerous items of clothing ruined. We had a really hard time getting used to all the pushing and lack of line etiquette. Doubts about our decision quickly crept in. Had we made a mistake? Were all these setbacks (read: signs) telling us that we should go back home to the comfortable life we once had? The problem was, we had no “home” to go back to. We had gotten rid of it and it was, mainly, my idea to do do. Daily conversations turned into obsessions, and disagreements strained our relationship. We turned on one another so we could find someone to blame. Yet, amid the doubt, an undeniable force kept pulling us back. The people, culture, food, and landscapes conspired to teach us that worthwhile things in life come with obstacles, and it’s the perseverance through perceived failures that truly matters. To be fair, it wasn’t that hard to be persuaded. Do you have any idea how majestic Vietnam really is?

The chaotic and scooter-filled streets of Hanoi… the limestone karst’s of Ha Long Bay… the cascading rice terraces of Sa Pa… the emerald-streams of Ninh Binh…the culturally enriching Hue…the ancient and lantern-lit Hoi An…the sand dunes of Mui Ne…the mountainous coffee haven, Da Lat…the historic and bustling Saigon…and, of course, the majestic canals of the Mekong.

But, it proved to be even more special than just what meets the eye. Vietnam challenged the very essence of the dreams I had envisioned. It became a testament to my resilience when an unknown force was propelling me toward my aspirations. Because it wasn’t just about the destination. It was the journey that mattered. All of those obstacles were teaching me to look beyond the image I had seen online. Vietnam taught me patience, humility, and dedication. Most importantly, it compelled me to slow down and appreciate the world around me. The pursuit of Instagram-worthy selfies and ticking off bucket list items took a back seat. That was me when we left. I had a list I had been working on for nearly a year. All of the things I wanted, needed, and expected to experience. Vietnam taught me to let it go. The bruises, the cuts, and the scrapes taught me to let go of what I could not control, so that I would have the time to appreciate the magic that is all around me.

That’s it, my friends. That’s how I fell in love with Vietnam.

Our Story

We were perfectly wrapped up in the materialistic and monopolized version of success. Yet, we both felt empty. In all that we attained, we didn’t feel like we were living a meaningful existence.

HOW IT ALL STARTED . . .

Our story starts more than fifteen years ago. We met while attending University, became close friends, and fell deeply in love. We quickly realized that it was that kind of soul mate-type connection we had only read about in books or watched in movies. Unfortunately, that did little to prepare us for the reality of how much work a long term committed relationship would take. Nevertheless, our connection to one another continued to grow and enabled us to persevere through some of our toughest and trying times together. After finishing school, we headed into the working world and bought our first property in the city of Toronto. Within a few years, we moved up the ladder in our jobs, traded in our car, and upgraded our condo.

We were perfectly wrapped up in the materialistic and monopolized version of success. Yet, we both felt empty.

In all that we attained, we didn’t feel like we were living a meaningful existence.

By 2012, we realized that we had put travel pretty low on our priority list, so we began investing in experiences. We vacationed in the Caribbean, flew to Europe, and road tripped in North America when our work schedule would allow. That's when all of our "plans" started to crumble. It was then that we were introduced to an alternative. We started researching couples who had "traded it all in" for a nomadic lifestyle. With every story and every success, a new way of living inspired us to make a change.

Then came 2014. I (Martina) walked into the office of my then-employer, hoping (and expecting) that it would time for the career advancement I had been training for the past few months. I walked out with two weeks notice instead. It was the dreaded “company restructuring” that made my current and hopeful new position no longer essential. I was non-essential after all. After a general freak out and good cry, I composed myself and slowly started to realize that this was the opportunity we had been waiting for. This was it. This was our chance to walk the walk. After some long and hard discussions, we agreed. We would focus on planning our life changing move from home owners in Canada to nomad backpackers. 2015 came really quickly. With the real-estate market flourishing in Toronto, we decided to sell our home, sell or store most of our belongings, and embark on a trip to see if we could find what had been missing.

On August 2015, we left for Southeast Asia and spent the next couple of years travelling through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. For the most part, we did it without the guide books and tours. We researched everything on our own or figured it out as we went along. It was the most overwhelming, enriching, and meaningful experience of our lives.

We ended up finding ourselves. Who and what we've always been.

Since then, we've returned to Canada for a few visits with family and friends, returned to our favourite spots in Southeast Asia, as well as dedicated time for discovering European destinations. We’ve road tripped and explored through France, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Bosnia, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Montenegro. We started to have more serious conversations about our future and talked about how our creative visions could be a success if we just combined our skillsets with our passions. This is how Maple Searup came to be. The name is our creative spin on a Canadian staple, Maple Syrup.

MAPLE

We love Canada. It will always be home and where we grew up.

Canada represents the values we hold, and it's where our story first started.

SEA

… South East Asia: where we rediscovered ourselves and our passions.

…the Sea: where we feel completely nourished and our best selves.

Together, we have built this idea from bullet points on a notepad to what we have today. Our goal has always remained the same. To seek; to explore; to learn; and to be able to capture even a sliver of this world's diverse beauty through our lens.

Why We Hate Travel Bloggers

It's important to remember that these people aren’t only travel bloggers, they're marketers. So, please, tell me when was the last time that profession hasn't simply fabricated or exaggerated the benefits of what they're selling?

We can’t tell you how many people we’ve met while travelling who tell us that they blatantly despise travel bloggers. Different types of people from places all around the world. Usually, they’re travellers or expats who believe that the travel blogging industry as a whole has really messed up their favourite places. Through these chats and through some observations of our own, we've come up with a list of the reasons why people hate travel bloggers.

THEY'RE SELLING YOU A PYRAMID SCHEME.

The travel blogging industry is one big pyramid scheme. Kind of like those motivational speakers and self-help gurus who make a shit ton of money off of people who need to be told what to do and how to do it. Travel bloggers easily sell their readers on the outrageous (and outdated) idea that "you can do it too". The truth is, they're well aware that you probably can’t or won’t. In the meantime though, you’ll buy their ebook so you can get a glimpse into the big "blogging secret" (Spoiler: there isn’t one. It’s usually just regurgitated BS of what all the other travel bloggers have already written). At the end of the day, we all just want to feel like we belong and they know it. So, they work their magic by selling you the idea that you’ll be welcomed into the blogging world with open arms. If you buy their ebooks and online courses, as well as attend their overpriced travel conventions… you too will get a chance to be friends with all the top travel gurus! Maybe they’ll even let you sit at their table for lunch.

THEY'RE LUCKY, NOT NECESSARILY TALENTED.

Truth is, many of the travel bloggers dominating the industry today are really fortunate they started back when they did. The industry wasn't as saturated and competitive like it has become today. They pretty much came up with a cute travel-related name, a broad niche, and started blogging when it was something "new". Before it was super trendy and everyone else with a laptop and iPhone called themselves bloggers. They're considered “pioneers”, while today you’re just another selfie-crazed, narcissist. Not to mention the fact that travel bloggers write with such a basic lack of grammar. Sorry, truth hurts and so does our brain every single time we try to get through one of your fifth-grade level articles. Last, but certainly not least, is that so many of bloggers conduct themselves unprofessionally. We've spoken to so many businesses in the last few years who feel like they got sold on the social media audience count of a blogger. Meanwhile, their brand was not represented in a way that defined their vision honestly and effectively.

THEY'RE INAUTHENTIC.

How many times can you describe everything as "totally amazing" or "so beautiful"? What about the things that completely SUCK about being a digital nomad and backpacking your way through places that people would sell their souls to escape? Why do they refuse to take a stance and act wishy-washy over important topics that demand a clear position? To be honest, I think it’s pretty obvious why. I mean, how could they sell you their ebook and courses if they were actually being real about all of the disadvantages that comes along with being in the industry? They're so cheesy. They’re always grinning from ear to ear, giving thumbs up signs, and posting pics of "doing hard work" on their laptops while sitting on a pristine beach. They start most of their posts with "our amazing readers, we couldn't have done this without you." So, they’re either constantly wearing rose-coloured glasses, ignorant of the issues real people face in the real world, and complete dorks…. or, they’re just faking it. You decide, but we think it's more of the latter.

THEY'RE SELL OUTS.

Not only are they selling you their products, but they're constantly trying to convince you that all of the products they do reviews for are worthy of your purchase. I mean, they “only do honest reviews…things they have tried and would sincerely recommend”. They only do sponsored posts for places or products that they truly "believe in". So, what do you think? Do they really really love a bunch of stuff that they just so happened to be paid really really generously to review? Hmmm. It's important to remember that these people are not only travel bloggers, but they're marketers! So, please, you guys tell me when was the last time this profession hasn't simply fabricated, or at the very least exaggerated, the benefits of the product they’re trying to sell you. Sell your soul. Make some money. Hello, Capitalism!

THEY LACK ORIGINALITY.

Let's get real. Every single travel blog niche has already been covered a million times over. These bloggers just keep writing a regurgitation of articles that are the same as the dozens that came before. The top ten things to do or see in said place. Ten reasons to start a travel couple blog. I'll give credit to a few bloggers who aren’t just copycats, but most travel bloggers don't personalize their stories. Probably ‘cause they don’t even know who they are. They’re just following the latest craze and capitalizing off of it. They write about what they know will get them the SEO hits and then re-post the same articles all over their social media pages time and time again. They easily build upon their viewership from the success they've already had, rather than reaching beyond their comfort zone and offering readers something original. Come on, Mary, it’s time to herd those sheep.

THEY'RE SELF PROCLAIMED EXPERTS.

They consider themselves "experts" on people and places, even when they haven't spent a substantial amount of time there. A few days in Laos? Omg, totally going to share my top twenty-seven things to do! A week in Bali? Time to tell you guys all the secret spots that people who’ve lived here for years couldn’t possibly already know about. One of the best example that comes to mind is an article that is still one of the top hits on google when searching about travel in Vietnam. One of the leading “pioneers” in the industry wrote a shallow and disparaging article on his experience in the country. He was there for a few weeks and visited about three locations in the northern to central part of Vietnam. It was a bunch of BS from someone who didn't understand the culture and allowed a few bad experiences to shape his views on the country as a whole. The negative impact on tourism that occurred as a result was completely unfair and not representative. Another know-it-all who doesn’t know shit.

THEY'RE SOCIAL MEDIA GAMESTERS.

Follow. Unfollow. Follow Again. Wait for it….Unfollow Again. Buy followers. Buy likes. Buy comments. You get my drift? When we were starting out, I compiled a list of about a hundred different travel bloggers who would use these social media methods to gain followers, without actually ever having to engage with their audience. Social media is a game to them. And like we said before, they're marketers before anything else. Their end goal with these channels is always "more followers" and "more likes" so that they can get contracts and invites based solely on the size of their social media audience. As if Instagram wasn’t phoney enough already, here come the travel bloggers, ready to rock this game best.

WE’RE JEALOUS.

Time for some bitter truth. You. Me. Us. We're all a bit envious of travel bloggers and the life they have managed to build for themselves. Whether or not we feel like it's deserved, these idiots found a way to live a life full of freedom that we all wish we had too. With the tiniest bit of work, they are invited to luxurious places and resorts. They make enough money to sustain their lifestyle as full-time globetrotters. Even if their Instagram-worthy lives are fabricated or exaggerated, they found a way to market it brilliantly. We'd be lying if we didn't admit that we are just jealous we can't (or refuse) to do the same. You know what they say, haters gonna hate.
